Giving back to the community and fostering an appreciation of art has long been a mission of The Pemaquid Group of Artists. Each year the Pemaquid Group of Artists presents checks to local schools and organizations for the purpose of encouraging and supporting art education. The funding is garnered through commissions, membership fees and donations. Recipients of these charitable gifts in the past have included Great Salt Bay School, Bristol Consolidated School, Healthy Kids, South Bristol School and Lincoln Academy. A museum pass to the Portland Art Museum is also awarded to Skidompha Library for use by members of the community.
This year in order to establish an additional scholarship for a graduating Lincoln Academy senior, the group is embarking upon the sale of artist-donated paintings. Individual member artists offer one of their original paintings for sale, with the total proceeds from the sale going directly to the scholarship fund. Currently Jan Kilburn’s watercolor entitled “Back Cove Skiffs” is featured and for sale.
The Pemaquid Group of Artists is the oldest art association in Maine and is comprised of 27 permanent members, two guest artists and a number of supportive patrons. The group was formed in 1928 when a small group of local and summer resident artists from New Harbor sponsored a summer exhibition of their works. The long-standing tradition of exhibiting works by local resident artists continues.
