A retrospect of large format mixed media paintings by John Vander is currently being featured at the Studio 53 Gallery at 53 Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor. Chosen by the artist, the exhibit presents work from the mid-seventies to the late 1990’s. The selection represents the artist’s personal favorites although Vander says, “I admit favorites may change from day to day. I haven’t chosen the most successful or the best but pieces that have possibilities to open still new directions or show a way to solve certain graphic problems. I work almost exclusively on paper. I like the poetry of making a strong statement with seemingly delicate materials.”
Most of the paintings were inspired by the Maine landscape but a few reflect Vander’s experience of Tuscany, Italy where he and his family have spent winters since the early nineties. Vander grew up in the Boston area and studied at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. He has summered in Maine all his life and has been a resident of Boothbay since the early seventies. He and his wife Karen have owned and run the Gold/Smith Gallery in Boothbay Harbor since 1974.
This special exhibit at Studio 53 will be featured through June 24th. For more information, call 633-2755. The Gold/Smith Gallery will be presenting a one-man exhibit of John Vander’s newest work from October 1st through Christmas 2012. His work is always featured at their loft space above their gallery at 41 Commercial St., Boothbay Harbor.
