Liros Gallery in Blue Hill is presenting “Channing Hare: The American Portrait” with an Opening Reception Thursday June 28 that includes a Gallery Talk at 6 p.m.
Channing Hare was the most successful portrait painter of his time not just because he was technically adept at portraying a flattering likeness, but also because he added glamour and romance to his subjects. Many were the rich and famous, for as he alternated between the art colony in Ogunquit and the social swirl of Palm Beach, he threw the most flamboyant parties. His portraits have an elegance obtained by emphasizing a gesture, curve of the neck or an averted gaze. An ambiguity pervades that hints at the erotic or inscrutable. The most significant portrait painter of Ogunquit and Palm Beach society is rediscovered at The Liros Gallery as a master of Magic Realism. For more information call 374-5370.
