The gWatson Gallery in Stonington is exhibiting new Maine paintings by Barry Gealt along with paintings by Gealt’s former colleagues and students from Indiana University, who have a presence in Maine. The exhibition begins with a reception for the artists 5 -7 p.m. Friday, July 13, and runs through August 2. Barry Gealt holds an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art . Gealt was a professor in the art department of Indiana University for thirty-two years. At Indiana he was a colleague of Robert Barnes and Nancy Morgan Barnes and taught hundreds of students. Among these students, Sam Cady, John Knight, Ann Lofquist, James Mullen and Pam Parsons will have paintings in this exhibition. Robert Barnes and Nancy Morgan Barnes will also have new work in the exhibition. Barry and Heidi Gealt, who is the director of the Indiana University Museum of Art have spent time in Maine each summer for the past twenty years. Gealt’s paintings on exhibit at the gWatson Gallery have their origin in his most recent trip to Maine in 2011.
