Mars Hall gallery artist Otty Merrill chosen for shows

“Middlesex” by Otty Merrill

Mars Hall Gallery in Tenants Harbor has announced gallery artist Otty Merrill has recently been chosen to participate in two major national shows. Merrill works in encaustic painting, a process of melting beeswax, dammar resin and artists pigments dating back to the 1st century A.D. and practiced by Greeks and Egyptians. A pioneer in the process, Merrill applies her medium to fiber clay instead of the usual wood or canvas surface.

Three of Merrill’s sculptures have been selected by the San Juan Islands Museum of Art in Friday Harbor, Washington for the show “WAXED @ IMA.” One of only ten encaustic artists invited to participate, Merrill’s selection recognizes her contributions to the medium. In Maine, Merrill’s work may be seen at Mars Hall Gallery, Tenants Harbor. For more information, call (207) 372-9996 or visit
