CRAFT gallery closes season with “Escaping Boundaries,”

“Rush Hour” by Lissa Hunter

CRAFT gallery in Rockland opens its last show of the season on Friday, Oct. 5 with “Escaping Boundaries,” new work by Portland artist Lissa Hunter and Lincolnville potter Simon van der Ven. Hunter defies the conventions of keeping art within the confines of the picture frame.  Her drawings begin within its borders, spill out and escape on to the surrounding gallery walls.  It is an uninhibited way of presenting art with spontaneity, freedom and drama.  These one of a kind installations create an intimate relationship between viewer and artist. Simon van der Ven, too, is escaping from the conventions and boundaries of the clay vessel as container.  Joining them to celebrate American Craft Week, Oct. 5 to 12, is Belfast calligrapher Jan Owen.  Her calligraphy on layered scrolls of Hollytex polyester recall the historic traditions of recording text. The show will continue until November 11.  For more information call 594 0167 and visit craftonelm.com.
