Maine Farmland Trust Gallery in Belfast invites the public to a reception 5:30 – 8 p.m. Fri. Sept. 6 for photographer Lily Piel. Piel has captured on film two dozen persons who have helped revive farming in Maine, and who remain committed to the cause. Piel’s project was commissioned by Maine Farmland Trust, which works to support Maine farmers and protect farmland, but has also successfully used art work and films to help educate people about farming’s challenges and opportunities.  “Lily is a gifted photographer with a keen eye for the essence of her subjects,” said John Piotti, the Trust’s executive director. “Her portraits capture these remarkable people so well.”    The opening of this gallery show coincides with Maine-Fare 2013, a two-day celebration of local food and farming held in downtown Belfast on September 6 and 7.  Among the many special events occurring at Maine Fare are two Friday events that dovetail with this gallery opening: “Oysters & Beer” occurring from 4-5:30 p.m. and a benefit folk music concert by singer-songwriter Dave Mallett beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets for either of these events can be purchased at MFT’s office or online at maine-fare.org
