“Beneath your wandering feet” By Andrea Sulzer

The Portland Museum of Art’s “Andrea Sulzer: Throughoutsideways,” on view April 26 through August 24 will be the first solo show at the PMA for Brunswick artist Andrea Sulzer. The exhibition is part of the Circa series, which features the work of living artists from Maine and beyond.   With more than 15 works, the exhibition will showcase a diverse range of Sulzer’s latest creations, produced largely during the six months leading up to the opening. There are meticulously crafted abstract drawings in black ink and colored pencil that explore the relationship between the handmade marks and paper support, as well as woodblock prints that create complex, unexpectedly varied surface topographies through multiple layers of ink. The exhibition will also include sculpted paper constructions in which Sulzer transforms two-dimensional drawings and prints into three-dimensional forms that incorporate the air around them into the very essence of the work.
