Artist Spotlight: Charles Movalli at Bayview Gallery

“I particularly like sparseness. I like looking at something and figuring out how little I can use, within reason. How little can I use to make the thing understandable?” Charles Movalli

“A View to Port Clyde” by Charles Movalli

In a recent interview I conducted with Gloucester, Massachusetts artist Charles Movalli, he spoke about his process and approach to painting. I always find it instructive to listen to artists talk about their own work. As a painter myself, I know that what an artist is thinking and feeling about a painting in progress can be quite different from the end result that goes on a gallery wall. With Movalli, whose paintings are made with an expressionist bravura that often tends to omit details in favor of texture and gesture, it really helped open up his paintings for me in ways that I hadn’t thought of before. To illustrate, I have selected several examples of Charlie’s paintings with some quotes from him and a few words of mine. I hope you find them interesting and useful.
