Mount Desert Island Open call for artists

Shaw “Sargent Drive” by Heather Thayer

Shaw Jewelry in Northeast Harbor invites local artists to participate in the fifteenth annual exhibition of The MDI OPEN, an exhibition of local creative talent. The MDI OPEN is a celebration of artists who live, work or have associations on Mount Desert Island. It is open to all, including seasoned professionals, amateurs, students, and anyone who wants to show their work in a gallery setting. You may show paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, crafts or mixed media; as long as it is something you are proud of.

This year we are suggesting an optional theme, which is: “Moods of Somes Sound.” We hope you will consider using the various aspects on one of our island’s most majestic and powerful features as a point of departure. We will hang these works in the most prominent gallery location where the group of related images will tell a familiar story. It is not mandatory that you follow this theme, but I hope many of you will find the theme a welcomed challenge. Any aspect of the Sound will be appropriate; details, long views, mountains, ocean, imaginative, your choice.

There are only two criteria to gain acceptance in this year’s exhibit. First, you must have work that you are proud of and willing to share with your community; and second, you must have an MDI affiliation. All interested persons are encouraged to contact the gallery. The space is limited and always fill fast.

Last year’s Mount Desert Open was an overwhelming success. It included 55 artists working from exploratory to realistic, from watercolor to weaving. The show will have a festive opening reception on Thursday May 21, 2015 and run through June 10th. Any resident of MDI, or anyone having a MDI affiliation is welcomed to exhibit. There is no jury process, but your work must be matted, framed and ready to hang, or presented in a professional manner. Please contact Shaw Gallery at 276-5000, or at info@shawjewelry.com for information.
