CRAFT opens with “Anonymous Biographies”

CRAFT Gallery opens its first show of the 2015 season with “Anonymous Biographies”, a retrospective of assemblages by Rockport artist Peter Chamberlain. The fictional biographies contain vintage anonymous photographs, portraits and keepsakes housed in frames and boxes designed and fabricated by the artist. The seven works on exhibit are among the artist’s favorites. Objects used in each have memories for Chamberlain: where he found them and their history. They are combined in dialogue with one another to tell a story and are presented in beautifully crafted boxes of walnut, beech and birch wood that integrates  Chamberlain’s background in fine furniture making and design with lyricism and imagination.

Also being shown is a curated selection of new work by midcoast artists Susan Atwater, Baharal / Gnida, Autumn Cipala, Hanako Nakazato, Jan Owen, George Pearlman and Christine Peters; Portland’s Joe Hemes and Lissa Hunter, new jeweler Mollie Vogel and potter Diana Thomas.

CRAFT is dedicated to presenting the handcrafted object as a work of art. The current show will run through July 3. Gallery hours are Wednesday to  Saturday from 11 to 5 and Sunday from ! to 4. Meet the artists on a Friday evening art walks on June 5 in the brick courtyard at 12 Elm Street in Rockland, Maine. FMI 207 594 0167 and
