A solo exhibition of new paintings by artist, Björn Runquist, opens at Landing Gallery, 409 Main St in Rockland on Friday, August 3. Maine’s bold ocean front is the inspiration for many of Runquist’s new paintings. The excitement and energy of the crashing surf against the rugged shoreline is captured in the clear light of Björn’s plein air paintings. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, July 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk.
“This show presents two bodies of work, one the familiar, “ordinary” sights as I explore the waterfront this year, from schooner repairs to working piers, the other is an exploration of crashing waves,” said Runquist. “For years, despite living on the coast of Maine, I have avoided painting “marine paintings” – if any subject has been done, it is crashing waves! Yet, last summer on Monhegan I was drawn irresistibly to paint the pounding surf. I was struck by how thrilling it was. This winter and spring I renewed that exploration to paint not seascapes but homages to the impressive, curling, thundering wave.”
Hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. For more information, call (207) 239-1223 or check out www.LandingArt.com
