This year’s auction will also feature an audio recording created specifically for the event called “A River Runs Through It.” The piece is an electro-acoustic soundscape, composed by Tom Luther, and performed by Mike Whitehead(trumpet/flugelhorn/effects) and Tom Luther(keyboard/loops/effects). The overall structure is governed by a series of field recordings of the Weskeag River. The musical composition is built from that, and employs the languages of European Art Music, American Jazz, and the coloristic approach of modern Ambient music. Improvisation is featured prominently throughout, governed by the structural benchmarks laid out by the recordings of the river. The work primarily explores reconciliation and cooperation between nature and technology, and secondarily the discovery of one’s own humanity through technology. “A River Runs Through It” will be recorded during the cocktail reception and the recording auctioned as part of the fundraiser.
