Erin Smith has a Master’s degree in Fine Art printmaking, and trained in several centuries-old media and techniques. When Ms Smith began her design business, Wheatberry Designs, she brought her strong respect for traditional, precise, and hands-on approaches. As in traditional fashion, Erin’s designs begin with hand-drawn works in the sketchbook and are then adapted for digital use, maintaining the quality of the hand-drawn original.
Raised nearby in Portsmouth, NH by a social worker mother and architect father, Erin developed a love of design and compassion for others from an early age. She finished her schooling eager to plug into a diverse and vibrant community and to make a tangible contribution outside the gallery walls. Ready to dedicate herself to a creative life in a socially engaged, environmentally conscious manner, Erin chose Maine as the place to manifest these goals. She says “I will continue to do my best to give back in equal measure to what this amazing state has given me.”
Erin Smith will teach Silverpoint using modern materials, but based on traditional techniques. Erin will supply materials, including the silverpoint stylus and panels. “The ground we’ll be using is a white acrylic base that is formulated specially to hold the silverpoint. Traditionally, it was a handmade mix including rabbit skin glue and pigment powders. We’ll be using panel, but paper works too!”
